I created this blog at the end of medical school - just prior to moving to Phoenix to start my OB/Gyn residency. I haven't spent nearly as much time writing as I had initially hoped. I always want to write something compelling and attention-grabbing, and when I don't have something overly epic to write about - I tend to steer clear of this space that I created. Well, news flash to me - I'm neck deep in residency and I rarely have super exciting adventures to share.
With that being said, I really am very happy.
I have decided that puppies and resident doctors have a lot in common. Except for puppies always get what they want and residents rarely do. Like sleep. We both love it, but only one of us gets it. And food - we're both suckers for food. In reality - residents will work harder for food than a puppy will. And other than work and sleep, food becomes the center of our lives. Knowing that our attending physician is going to order us Thai food for dinner during a 24 hour call is essentially the peak of any OB/Gyn resident's happiness. It's the little things that get us through.
The end of my PGY-1 year is near. Three more weeks left on my night float rotation at our county hospital. I am nervous but so, so excited to move on to my second year of residency. With another year, comes more responsibility - and I am excited to keep expanding my skill set to become the most experienced, well rounded 'woman surgeon baby catcher' that I can be.
At the end of this year, I have delivered a ton of babies, become competent in the more basic gyn surgeries, and spent a ton of time learning and growing with my classmates. Outside of medicine - I have been in several friend's weddings - I love you guys! and have been planning my own wedding as well! ... Just when you think being a resident doctor is an insane life, try adding on planning a wedding. If I have any advice to say about that - HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER. THE MONEY IS WORTH IT. I would go crazy if I didn't have Janet.
Outside of my work life and my love life, not a lot has changed. I'm still loving where I live and I'm always meeting new fun and interesting people. The weather continues to impress me. My biggest challenges are keeping my home life organized. If anyone knows of a professional laundry-doer looking for work, give them my number. You can buy a housekeeper, you can have ready-to-eat food delivered to your door, but why in 2019 is there no app I can use to hire someone to come to my house and put my clothes away? Someone should make this happen.
Even though it's not a new calendar year, my life still functions in academic calendar years. It probably always will. My personal goals for my PGY-2 year probably need to be to continue to improve my life's organization (will be my forever battle) and to get a puppy. That way I'll have someone around at home who loves the same things I do and to warm me up during these cold Arizona days ;)
Professionally - I've got some exciting research projects going on, and obviously I still have a lot of skills and knowledge to gain so let's not get into all those details just yet.
I'm going to try to come around more often. Until next time, thanks for checkin' in with me. Much love. xoxoxo. katie.
